Xiling Tower
|
In 601 A.D.(Sui Dynasty)，at the
instmcution of the then emperor，a nine-storied Xiling Tower
was ercted in the compound of Daming Temple to preserve the
shrine of sakyamuni．Hence the temple is also called Xiling Temple．Many
famous poets of the the Tang Dynasty mounted the left behind
some popular poems. Unfortunately the tower was burnt down in
843 in theTang Dynasty
Appeal for restoration of the historic view had never diminished
after the burning down of the tower．In 1988 a Site in the eastern
area of the temple close to the ruinS was set aside for the
reconstruction of the Tower．With the Support of numerous Buddhists
from home and abroad，a total of RMB 10 million was allocated。and
construction started in 1993 and did not finish until 1995.
The tower is a nine-storied square one,built in the Tang construction
style .It is 70 meters high and the total construction aqace
is 1,865 aquare meters.On the ground floor are four jade inages
of Buddha，facing the four directions．They are gifts presented
to YangZhou by Mr. U Kol Lay，MayOr of Yongon，Myomar in 1996．Also
presented by the mayor is an image of 2.2-meter high，5.7-meter
long and 18-tonweight Sleeping Buddha，Which is kept in the Sleeping
Buddha Hall connected to the tower by an archway.
On the ground floor tower is a fresco describing a Buddhist
story，which denotes the pursuit for truth and knowledge. On
top of the tower，you will enjoy a paramount View of Yangzhou
City.
